Website Grading

February 26th, 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

This SEO thing just keeps me guessing. After smugly realising how well this blog ranks for key search terms, I switched on the SEO Book plugin for Firefox, and quickly realised that this site has a page rank of zero, zilch, nada. I backed this up with a quick parse on the Website Grader, and yeah, zero page rank.

The Website Grader did give me some pointers though.

  • No permanent redirect from agilemicroisv.com to www.agilemicroisv.com. I’ll have to look at this. An initial parse of GoDaddy suggests everything is as it should be.
  • Page Rank = 0. Fail.
  • Alexa rank of 5,877,627
which is in the top 48.98% of all web sites. This seems pretty lame. Fail.
  • Inbound links = 590.
  • No entries in DMOZ, Yahoo Directory or ZoomInfo.

Website Grade = 67

Must try harder. I’ll report back when I’ve made the changes suggested. I’m curious to see the results.

I’m
not too worried about the Home Document Manager site at the minute,
simply because the site isn’t finished, and the software isn’t
finished.

Thanks for writing about and linking to Website Grader!

A quick note on the 301 / permanent redirect. I can separately go to
agilemicroisv.com and http://www.agilemicroisv.com and the URLs are different
(one has www and one does not) while the content is mirrored.
Additionally, when we ask a search engine how many links each URL has,
we get a different number, so the search engines do see the two URLs
    differently.

There is the potential for the two verisons of the URL to confuse
search engines. Its a best practice to fix this and make it very clear
to search engines that you ahve one website with one set of links and
    one set of content.

(PS – GoDaddy has in my experience been difficult to work with in
terms of fixing this problem. I wish I had more useful advice.)

Hi Mike, wow, that is fast community participation :¬)

Yeah that was the thing pointed out by the report that I think might
be hurting this sites rankings. There is kind of a help article on the
    subject over at Typepad here:

    http://support.typepad.com/cgi-bin/typepad.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=179

I have followed it – so I’m going to wait a day or two to see if the problem is fixed.
